Ethical Breach at RBC: CFO Fired Over Undisclosed Relationship Leading to Preferential Treatment

The Royal Bank of Canada (RBC) recently dismissed its Chief Financial Officer, Nadine Ahn, due to her involvement in an undisclosed personal relationship with another employee. This decision followed an internal investigation, which revealed that Ahn’s relationship led to preferential treatment for the other involved employee, including promotions and compensation increases. Such actions contravened RBC’s code of conduct, which emphasizes transparency, fairness, and respect in all employee relationships.

The investigation, assisted by outside legal counsel, determined that although this relationship violated the bank’s ethical guidelines, it had not impacted the bank’s financial statements, overall strategy, or business performance. In response to this incident, RBC has appointed Katherine Gibson, who has been with the bank since 2002 and served as vice president of finance, as the interim CFO.

This incident highlights the complexities and potential risks of personal relationships in the workplace, especially involving senior executives, and underscores the importance of adhering to established professional and ethical standards (HR Reporter) (BNN) (Daily Hive VAN).
